Blurred Lines Contraversy

In March 2014, R&B singer Robin Thicke, producer Pharrell Williams and rapper T.I. released the song Blurred Lines. The controversial track has been widely criticized for its appearance to objectify women, deemed ‘most controversial song of the decade’ (Dorian Lynskey, 2013) and was propelled into the public eye under scrutiny over the messages it sent to the viewer. The video features semi-naked models provocatively dancing with the fully clothed singers. This seems to portray the idea of confusion and therefore ‘blurred lines’ regarding when and how women give consent for sex and combined with the glorification of rape and violent sex. When one analyses the video in the light of feminism and gender objectification it raises the age-old question of the misconception of consent through the male role.
